The Shree Shree Siddheswari Kali Mandir stands at 14 Siddheshwari Lane in central Dhaka, Bangladesh. Tradition holds that the sanctuary was established in 1441 CE by a devotee remembered as Chand Rai, and over the centuries the temple has given its own name to the locality of Siddheshwari that now surrounds it.
At the heart of the shrine is the venerated image of Maa Kali, the dark goddess of transformation and grace, before whom generations of worshippers have offered flowers, lamps and the recitation of her many names. Later additions extended the temple with rows of columns, while a sacred Roktochondon, or red sandalwood tree, continues to stand within the courtyard as a living witness to the temple's antiquity.
The precinct nestles in a densely populated quarter of Dhaka, its narrow approaches crowded with daily life. Nearby once lay an old pond and a cluster of smaller shrines, and the busy junction of Malibagh sits close at hand, so that worship here unfolds amid the unceasing movement of the city.
Festivals shape the year at Siddheswari. The autumn Sharadiya celebrations bring devotees to perform puja before the divine Mother, culminating in the grand observance of Durga Puja and the procession that carries the image to the waters of immersion on Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day. Throughout the calendar smaller observances draw the faithful into the rhythm of Shakta devotion.
The Siddheswari Kali Mandir is one of the oldest functioning Hindu temples in Dhaka and a focal point for the Bengali Shakta tradition in Bangladesh. Its centuries-long presence has shaped both the spiritual and the civic identity of the neighbourhood that bears its name, and its festival cycles draw together the local Hindu community in remembrance of the Mother.
