About

Wat Ratchaburana is a name shared by a number of Buddhist temples across Thailand. The three best-known foundations bearing this title stand in Ayutthaya, Bangkok, and Phitsanulok, each shaped by the distinct historical and devotional currents of its surrounding community.

The Ayutthaya temple sits within the ancient royal capital, its weathered prang counted among the most distinctive monuments of the former kingdom. The Bangkok foundation rises within the Rattanakosin landscape, while the Phitsanulok wat carries the religious heritage of central-northern Thailand.

Though scattered across different cities and shaped by different patrons across the centuries, the temples named Wat Ratchaburana are tied by a shared naming tradition rooted in the Thai monarchy's long custom of establishing or restoring monasteries as acts of royal merit. Each remains a working sanctuary where the rhythms of Theravada Buddhist practice continue to be observed.
