About

St. Joseph's Cathedral, the Cathédrale Saint-Joseph de Fort-Liberté, stands within the city of Fort-Liberté, the capital of Haiti's Nord-Est department on the Caribbean coast. The name of the town itself, the Fort of Liberty, recalls the early years of Haitian independence, and the cathedral serves the Catholic community whose history is inseparable from the founding of that town.

Following the Roman or Latin Rite, the cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Fort-Liberté, whose see in Latin is rendered Dioecesis Castelli Libertatis. The diocese gathers parishes across the northeastern reaches of Haiti, where Catholic life remains central to community identity.

The original construction of the church was completed in 1703, during the colonial era when the surrounding settlement was still known under earlier names. Over the following centuries the building has witnessed the upheavals of revolution, independence and natural disaster that have marked Haitian history, and it has been maintained as a focus of worship through each era.

Under the pastoral care of Bishop Quesnel Alphonse, the cathedral continues to celebrate the sacraments, mark the great solemnities of the liturgical year and welcome the faithful to the worship of Christ under the patronage of Saint Joseph, the foster father of the Lord and a protector of families and labourers.

Significance

St. Joseph's Cathedral is the spiritual heart of one of Haiti's smaller but historically significant dioceses, anchoring Catholic life in the country's northeastern department. Its three centuries of presence in Fort-Liberté link the worship of the Caribbean Church to the longer story of the town and the nation, and its quiet dedication to Saint Joseph continues to gather a faithful people in prayer.
